The oldest university in the Western world is not a campus but a city habit — medieval lecture halls behind ordinary doors, student politics on the walls, and the Archiginnasio's coats-of-arms by the thousand. Bologna doesn't have a university; it is one.
Founded in 1088 by students who hired their own professors — the original student-run institution — it drew Dante, Petrarch, and Copernicus, and made 'la Dotta' (the Learned) the first of Bologna's nicknames.
Bologna granted degrees to women centuries early: Laura Bassi became Europe's first female university professor here in 1732, lecturing in physics. The university's anatomy theater dissected under a ceiling carved with constellations.
